The City of Blue Ash is recruiting for Part-Time Firefighter/Paramedic.  The Part-Time Firefighter/Paramedic engages directly in fire prevention and fire-fighting activities to protect and safeguard lives and property; responds to emergency calls for paramedical services; assists in maintenance and repair of fire and emergency medical service stations and equipment; and other appropriate duties as assigned by or through the City Manager.

Years of service will be considered in determining starting pay.

 Examples of Duties:

An employee in this class is responsible for performing hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.  In addition to responding to calls for paramedical assistance and alarms of fire, a portion of a Firefighter/Paramedic's work consists of the performance of various duties in the maintenance of the fire and emergency medical service stations, and the preventive and corrective maintenance of trucks and equipment.  A Firefighter/Paramedic should be familiar with modern fire-fighting and prevention methods and procedures.  Supervisors make assignments of specific tasks and indicate methods and procedures to be followed.  Each Firefighter/Paramedic should be a proficient driver, pump operator, ladder operator, snorkel operator, salvage worker, and fire inspector.

 Typical Qualifications:

  • Provides paramedical and emergency medical services at emergency scenes involving injuries, life-threatening situations and deaths;
  • Removes persons from burning buildings;
  • Operates fire-fighting equipment;
  • Lays and connects hose lines and operates nozzles directing water streams;
  • Operates and uses snorkel and other equipment for high level fire-fighting;
  • Performs salvage operations at scene of fire, such as covering furniture with tarpaulin, mopping floors and clearing debris;
  • Operates radio equipment;
  • Cleans, maintains and makes repairs to fire-fighting and emergency medical service equipment;
  • Participates in fire drills, individual and group training courses (including fire-fighting theory and practices) and first-aid techniques;
  • Participates in training sessions to maintain professional paramedic status;
  • Checks fire hydrants for operating and physical condition;
  • Performs a wide variety of routine tasks in connection with the maintenance of fire station quarters and grounds;
  • Keeps records and makes reports;
  • Attends fire-fighting school;
  • Attends seminars and meetings, related to emergency medical service, fire prevention and extinguishment.

    Ability to get along well with others under adverse conditions; knowledge of emergency medical services and functions of a paramedic; knowledge of area streets and hospitals; fire-fighting skills; willingness to perform any task assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep records and make reports; aptitude for mechanical work under adverse conditions; excellent physical condition.

Step II: As vacancies occur within this classification, the second step will consist of a physical agility and skills assessment, which both parts must be passed in order to continue in the process.  The list of candidates to be further considered will be developed directly from the results of Step II.  

Step III:  The third step will be an interview.  Typically the interview will be the same day as Step II for those candidates passing both parts of Step II.

The City of Blue Ash reserves the right to modify the selection process as necessary to conform to administrative or business necessity. 
Step IV: Once a selection has been made from Step III, the selected applicant(s) will be requested to submit to a background investigation. Upon successful completion of the background investigation, the applicant will be requested to submit to a pre-employment drug screening and fit-for-duty physical exam.
Step V: After successful completion of Step IV, applicants will be given a formal written offer of employment and will meet with the Human Resources Office to complete New Employee Paperwork.
