The TMC Emergency Department is the busiest Emergency Department in Southern Arizona, seeing at least 95,000 patients a year between both the adult and pediatric ED. We have a total of 45 beds separated into 4 pods (North, South, East, and West). Patients are placed into pods based on their triage acuity. The staffing ratio is 1:2 to 1:4 depending on the acuity of the patient. We follow the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) Guidelines for triage of all ER patients. We see a variety of patients within the department – everything from sore throats and simple lacerations to respiratory failure and STEMI patients. TMC has earned certification as a  Comprehensive Stroke Center, accreditation as a Chest Pain Center, and the Gold Plus Achievement Award for stroke programs from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association. There is a separate Behavioral Health Observation Unit located within the Emergency Department. The ED embraces the Lean Methodology and strives for a culture of continuous process improvement to create the best patient care experience for our community and a work environment that excels in teamwork and collaboration. All nurses are required to be CPR, ACLS, PALS, CPI and NIHSS certified.


Certified Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedics render emergency assistance such as first aid, bandaging and splinting to injured or ill patients. Applies artificial respiration or administers oxygen in cases of suffocation and asphyxiation.  Administers antiseptic solution to prevent infection until patient can receive more extensive professional care as needed.  Starts and administers intravenous fluids. Assists in lifting patient onto wheeled cart or stretcher and into and out of ambulance.  Work is performed under the review of administrative medical direction and follows communication protocols.



Maintains direct and general patient care, provides on-going patient assessments and implements appropriate intervention, under Emergency Department (ED) Physician or intermediary staff orders.

Administers IV medications during a procedure, under the direction of an ED physician, and in accordance with established protocols.

Assesses patient’s status pre, during and post procedure and communicates accurately and timely any concerns or changes to ED Physician or intermediary staff.

Takes vital signs, weighs patients, collects routine urine specimens, cleans catch specimens, stool specimens, and sputum specimens in accordance with established procedures.

Administers and controls State approved medications; prepares, hangs, monitors and discontinues intravenous fluids.

Applies/administers O2 flow as prescribed by ED Physician.

Assists physicians and nursing staff with procedures utilizing aseptic/sterile techniques including but not limited to IV set-up, intubation, suturing, arterial lines, and chest tubes .

Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after discharges; monitors and restocks supplies.

Collects information through history, physical examination and records ensuring information is accurately documented and reported.

Takes care of the body after death.

Cooperates with other personnel to achieve department objectives and maintains good employee relations, interdepartmental objectives, and infection control policies.

Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values, policies and standards.

Performs related duties as assigned.



EDUCATION:  High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

EXPERIENCE :  Six (6) months of paramedic-EMT experience.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advances Life Support (PALS) certification required. Current Arizona Emergency Medical Technician Certification to the Paramedic level (National Registry preferred) required. Crisis Prevention Instruction (CPI) certification required within 6 months of hire.


  • Knowledge of EMT-Paramedic best practices.

  • Skill in performing emergency assistance such as first aid, bandaging and splinting, applying artificial respiration or administering oxygen in cases of suffocation and asphyxiation.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others’ communication or instructions to take appropriate action.

  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers; and ability to read a clock and accurately document time.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
